“We offer guidance to people of any age who want to confidently invest their retirement account on their own.”
First, we show you how to invest on your own without paying an investment advisor, saving you between 1 – 2% in fees annually. For a $100,000 account this can represent between $1,000 – $2,000 every year. Our monthly membership is only $19.99 a month or you can select an annual membership for only $199.99, and save $40. Second, we show you how to buy low-cost exchange-traded funds (ETFs) which can cost around 1% less than actively managed mutual funds, saving you another $1,000 a year.
We spend the time searching for the right combination of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) so you don’t have to. Also, our Monthly Video Newsletter cuts through the financial market’s “noise” by summarizing 30 days of market news in 8 minutes, saving you the time it would take to read about 30 issues of The Wall Street Journal.

ETF stands for “exchange-traded fund”. An ETF is similar to a mutual fund in that it invests in a basket of stocks or bonds so you get broad diversification within a single fund. A single ETF can own over one thousand companies. ETFs are very popular investments because of their low cost. Their fund expense is much less than traditional mutual funds or index funds. You buy and sell an ETF the same way you would buy and sell a stock by placing a trade in your online brokerage account.
We choose our ETFs based on several important factors such as the fund’s cost, historical performance, number of holdings within the fund, how long the fund has existed, the quality of the fund company managing the ETF, and how closely the fund tracks the asset class in which we want to invest.
On an ongoing basis Retirement Investor is monitoring what is happening in the global financial markets. We formally evaluate the asset allocation and the underlying funds within our portfolios on a monthly basis. In an average year we will typically make changes to your model portfolio three to four times. If a change is necessary, you will be notified by email and also on our website when you log in.
We use Morningstar as our main data source for providing performance information.
Our “Personalize My Portfolio” tool makes this process simple. All you need to do is enter the current value of your retirement account and the tool will automatically show you how much money to invest in each fund and the number of shares you need to buy. You can then print, download, or email this personalized Portfolio Trade Report that list all the trades you need to make. From there, you’ll place your trades with the online broker of your choice.
You can use our “Portfolio Calculator” tool to generate Portfolio Trade Reports for any of our five model portfolios. However, alerts for model portfolio updates will be based on the model portfolio you have selected as “My Current Portfolio”.
No. Retirement Investor is designed to help you invest on your own using your existing accounts. We do not open accounts at Retirment Investor.
It is easy to change which portfolio you are following. Simply log in, click “My Portfolio”, then click “Switch My Portfolio”. This tool will allow you to generate a Portfolio Trade Report that shows you what trades you need to make to convert to your new model portfolio.
You should not print your Portfolio Trade Report until you’re ready to place your trades because the report is based on the current market value of each fund, which will change daily.
Most investors rebalance their portfolio annually. However, portfolios should be “rebalanced” on an ongoing basis with cash flows as new deposits are made (or as distributions are taken). We provide a rebalancing tool called “Rebalance My Portfolio” that will show you how many shares of each fund you need to buy and sell.
Yes and no. Retirement Investor model portfolios cannot be looked up in the newspaper or on financial websites because they do not carry a “ticker” symbol. However, every ETF that is used to build our model portfolios does carry a “ticker”. The performance of each ETF is published and updated daily in every major newspaper and financial data website.
You’ll receive the Monthly Video Newsletter by the 15th of the following month.
